Spring Festival Scrolls /Couplet: A Spring Festival Tradition in China
It refers to antithetical celebrating verses written on a couple of scrolls, plus a banner as the summary or title, expressing mostly their hopes for the future and ocasionally their gratitude for the past. Before the spring festival day(the first day of a lunar year) arrives, the Chinese people will paste their right and left door panels with these couplets, and lintel with the banner, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper.
For this year's spring couplet, I did both the calligraphy and the verse, which was inspired by the blooming sweet-scented osmanthus in my parents' yard.
The couplet reads:
"Thy air is too genial,
and thy breath is too divine,
to pin down even with my pen.
Thy passion is too subtle,
whilst thy place is too rural,
even for the winter to last longer."
The lintel banner reads:
"Sweet Osmanthus As Green As Jade Celebrating the New Year"
